Tideline's editing workspace: source and program monitors above, project panel and a multitrack timeline below

Everything a cut needs

The long-established professional workflow: three-point editing, ripple, roll, slip and slide, and J/K/L shuttle on a timeline drawn for speed.

Multitrack timeline

Any number of video and audio tracks, linked clips, snapping, thumbnails, waveforms, markers and nested sequences.

Twelve editing tools

Selection, ripple, rolling, rate stretch, razor, slip, slide, pen, track select, hand, zoom and type.

Keyframes on everything

Every parameter of every effect animates: numbers, positions, colours, choices, even a title's text and font. Bezier graphs with ease presets.

67 effects

Colour correction, LUTs, blurs, keying, crop, distortion and stylise, plus EQ, dynamics and pitch for audio.

Animate without keyframes

Shake, oscillate, spin, pulse to a tempo, pan & zoom, strobe and flicker, each previewed as a motion plot.

Smooth playback

Performance, Balanced and Quality presets: preview resolution down to 1/8, frame dropping and render threads.

Transitions & audio mixing

Dissolves, dips, wipes, iris, clock, push and slide; crossfades; a track mixer with faders, balance, mute and solo.

Export anything

H.264, H.265, AV1, VP9, ProRes, DNxHR, GIF, PNG sequence, WAV, FLAC, MP3, Opus, rendered in the background.

Any frame shape

16:9, 9:16 vertical, square, 4:5, 21:9 or custom. Change it later and clips keep their place in the frame.

Keys you already know

One key per tool, J/K/L shuttle, I/O marks, and comma/period to insert or overwrite from the source monitor.

Install

Tideline is written in Python and uses your distribution's GTK 4, MLT and FFmpeg. Download the zip, unpack it, then pick one of these.

1 · Get the dependencies

On Arch Linux everything is in the official repositories:

sudo pacman -S --needed \
  python python-gobject python-cairo \
  python-numpy gtk4 libadwaita mlt \
  ffmpeg frei0r-plugins sdl2 qt6-base \
  qt6-svg qt6-5compat rubberband

On other distributions, install the same packages from your package manager.

2 · Run or install it

Try it straight from the folder:

unzip tideline-0.0.1.zip
cd tideline-0.0.1
./run.sh

Or add it to your app menu with an icon and the .tideline file type:

makepkg -si # Arch
./install.sh # anything else, into ~/.local

Where it stands

This is the first release. Here is an honest picture of what's there and what isn't yet.

In 0.0.1

  • First-run setup: pick a layout, playback quality and your first project
  • Project manager with recent projects on every launch
  • Source & program monitors, three-point editing, safe margins
  • Unlimited undo with a History panel; autosave every two minutes
  • Effect presets (.tlpreset) and private title fonts
  • Plain-JSON project files that move with their media

Not there yet

  • Multicam, captions, proxy workflow, hardware encoding presets
  • Curves and scopes; colour tools are sliders for now
  • Titles are edited in Effect Controls, not on the canvas
  • Time remapping (speed is constant per clip)
  • EDL / FCP XML / OTIO interchange
  • Freely re-dockable panels (three fixed workspaces)
